A universal coupling, also known as a universal joint or U-joint, is a mechanical device used to connect two shafts that are not in line with each other but need to transmit rotary motion. It is a flexible coupling that allows for the transmission of power and motion at various angles and misalignments between the connected shafts.

The universal coupling consists of three main components:

1. Yoke: The yoke is a fork-shaped component with two arms that attach to the ends of the shafts. It provides the connection point for the two shafts.

2. Cross: The cross, also called the spider or trunnion, is a small cylindrical component with four arms that are perpendicular to each other. It sits within the yoke and allows for rotation between the connected shafts.

3. Bearings: The bearings are located at the ends of each arm of the cross. They provide support and reduce friction during rotation.

When the input shaft rotates, it transmits rotational motion to the cross through one of the yoke arms. The cross, being flexible, can accommodate angular misalignment between the input and output shafts. The rotation of the cross is then transferred to the output shaft through the other yoke arm. The universal coupling allows for continuous rotation of the output shaft, even when the input and output shafts are not in perfect alignment.

Universal couplings are commonly used in various applications where there is a need to transmit rotary motion between shafts that are at an angle or have slight misalignments. They are found in automotive drivetrains, industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, and other mechanical systems. The flexibility and ability to compensate for misalignments make universal couplings essential for efficient power transmission in these applications.
